There are so many demands made on anyone’s paycheque these days that proper budgeting and even cutting expenses where possible becomes essential in order to remain relatively solvent, with each additional expense being taken on a prospect that has to be weighed up carefully before being taken on. And often one of those expenses is medical aid and people find themselves feeling the need to justify buying a policy when perhaps the money would be better spent elsewhere.
Your health is your most important asset, even more so than your home (after all, if you’re not healthy who is going to work to pay the mortgage?) and so really no one should ever need to feel like they have to justify spending on healthcare to themselves. But if you, like many, still need to give yourself, not even anyone else, enough good reasons to make the investment in a good medical aid plan.
You Deserve Not to Worry
Even the healthiest of young people who never feel the need to visit a GP know somewhere in the back of their minds that if they were to become ill suddenly, or get injured that the financial toll would be a big one. And those who have no kind of medical coverage at all tend to worry about it, even if it is just a little, almost all the time. Even smaller healthcare costs, like a course of antibiotics to clear up an infection, can be more expensive than anyone banks on and quickly exceed the cost of the monthly premium for a medical aid plan. Even if you never use it, having some kind of medical aid plan will provide peace of mind as well as medical coverage and everyone deserves as much of that as possible.
It’s Probably Not Expensive as You Think
The number of different medical aid plans available in South Africa is growing and as is the case in with anything else these companies have to remain competitive to stay in business. One of the ways that many of them are doing this is to offer an increased number of plan options including ‘mix and match’ type options that allow consumers to chose just the coverages they think they’ll need, reducing their costs but still allowing them to get the basics at a price that fits their budget.
You Might Get Healthier
Everyone knows that prevention is better than cure and that includes medical aid companies. Increasingly they are offering a number of preventative wellness programmes, initiatives and informational guidance to their members at little or no extra cost.
These ‘bonuses’ take many different forms. Most medical aid plans offer discounted memberships on gyms as well as free basic annual health screenings that cover things like blood pressure, cholesterol and BMI measurements. Many also offer health fairs that offer even more assistance and certainly a lot of great information for free. There are even some medical plans reward members for taking certain steps to remain as healthy as possible (and these are simple things like joining a gym or even a running club.) All of things have the potential to help you get – or stay – healthier which is a great thing for you and your wallet!
